Made in Seki, Japan

MCUSTA is a brand of Marusho Industry, based in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture.

Marusho traces its history back to 1964, while production of MCUSTA pocket knives began in 2000.

Seki itself has a blade-making tradition dating back to the 13th century.

The availability of iron, charcoal and water historically attracted swordsmiths to the area, eventually establishing Seki as one of Japan's major cutlery centres.

Today, that historical knowledge coexists with modern precision manufacturing.

MCUSTA sits directly at that intersection.

CAD, laser cutting, CNC machining and hand finishing

MCUSTA's production process begins before any knife reaches the assembly bench.

The company uses 3D computer-aided design during product development and prototyping.

Components are then produced using modern precision processes including laser cutting and computer-controlled machining.

The knives are subsequently assembled, adjusted, finished and inspected by hand.

This hybrid process describes MCUSTA much more accurately than simply calling the products either “handmade Japanese knives” or “industrial knives”.

What is VG-10?

VG-10 is a Japanese stainless steel widely used in cutlery.

In the MCUSTA models discussed here, it is used as the core steel in certain laminated blade constructions.

The name of the steel alone, however, never tells the whole story.

Heat treatment, edge geometry, grind and final finishing all contribute to how a blade behaves.

Damascus and San Mai are not the same thing

These terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they describe different concepts.

Damascus

In this context, Damascus refers to a layered steel construction creating a visible pattern on the surface of the blade.

San Mai

San Mai is a three-layer construction in which a central core steel is placed between two outer layers.

On the relevant MCUSTA reference, the documented core material is VG-10.

Understanding the complete blade construction is therefore more useful than judging the knife purely by its visible pattern.

Caring for Damascus and San Mai blades

Even when stainless steel is involved, a knife should be cleaned and dried after use.

Avoid leaving moisture or residue on layered blades for prolonged periods.

For routine care:

• use a soft cloth;
• dry the blade thoroughly;
• apply an appropriate light protective product if needed;
• avoid aggressive abrasives that may alter the finish or visual contrast between layers.

When sharpening, work on the cutting edge while respecting the original geometry rather than polishing the decorative blade surfaces.

Caring for fine wood handles

Natural wood also benefits from simple precautions.

Avoid:

• prolonged immersion;
• dishwashers;
• extreme changes in humidity;
• aggressive solvents.

For normal cleaning, a slightly damp cloth followed by immediate drying is generally sufficient.

Because wood is a natural material, grain and colour may vary slightly between individual knives.
