Fred Perrin: design begins with use

Fred Perrin describes himself first and foremost as a full-time knife maker, driven both by the history of edged tools and by the way they are actually used.

That approach explains much of his design work.

Rather than starting with a shape intended primarily to look spectacular, a Perrin design often begins with a practical constraint: secure the grip, reduce overall bulk, preserve enough cutting edge for the intended task or simplify the construction.

This way of thinking led to the design most strongly associated with his name: La Griffe.

La Griffe: a shape that became a signature

La Griffe is inseparable from Fred Perrin's design identity.

Its architecture is immediately recognisable: a very compact fixed blade built around a large central finger ring.

Perrin has explained that he wanted a small fixed blade that could remain compact while offering a secure grip. The short blade, central ring and overall proportions therefore began as functional decisions before becoming visual signatures.

This is why La Griffe should not simply be described as “a knife with a hole”.

The ring, the transition between handle and blade and the compact scale work together as one coherent design.

That design proved strong enough to support many later interpretations.

From La Griffe to an entire knife family

At MaxKnives, La Griffe is not represented by a single reference.

The original concept has appeared in a variety of constructions and materials, including steel, titanium, Damascus and G10, as well as different sizes.

This is one of the most interesting recurring themes in Fred Perrin's work: reducing size forces the designer to decide what is genuinely necessary.

The handle, blade shape, cut-outs and ring are no longer simply stylistic decisions. Every available millimetre contributes to the design.

Fred Perrin folding knives

Perrin has also translated this design approach into folding knives.

The MaxKnives catalogue includes models such as the Nano, together with other folders that carry elements familiar from his fixed-blade work.

A folding mechanism naturally introduces new constraints: pivot placement, locking system, closed size and the way the blade fits into the handle.

The interest of these knives lies precisely in seeing how an identity strongly associated with fixed blades can be adapted to a folder without merely copying an existing shape.

Recognition beyond MaxKnives

Fred Perrin's influence extends beyond the designs edited by MaxKnives.

International manufacturers have also produced knives based on his work.

Emerson Knives produced its own version of La Griffe, while Spyderco developed several Fred Perrin designs, including the Street Bowie and Street Beat. Spyderco also produced the PPT folder, whose name refers to its three designers: Fred Perrin, Philippe Perotti and Sacha Thiel. 

These collaborations demonstrate how Perrin's ideas can move between different manufacturers and constructions while retaining recognisable design characteristics.

Multi-designer projects

Some references extend this approach further through designs involving more than one creator.

The MaxKnives catalogue includes projects associated with Fred Perrin and Michael Janich, as well as an interpretation of the Griffe concept associated with American knife maker Ed Schempp.

Steel, titanium and G10

The Fred Perrin range also provides a useful introduction to materials with very different properties.

Many MaxKnives editions use 440C stainless steel, which remains straightforward to maintain when cleaned and dried after use.

Some versions use titanium, including anodised finishes. Avoid aggressive abrasives on anodised titanium, as they can alter the oxide layer responsible for the colour.

G10, meanwhile, is a composite material rather than steel. Some Perrin-shaped pieces are made from G10; their exact intended use should be checked on the individual product page rather than inferred solely from their shape.

Caring for Kydex sheaths

Many compact fixed blades are supplied with Kydex or similar thermoplastic sheaths.

The main maintenance point is the inside of the sheath.

Dust, sand and other particles may become trapped and can mark the blade through repeated insertion and removal.

Rinse the sheath when needed, allow it to dry completely and periodically check that retention remains appropriate.
