Max Knives FP1802 — One-piece 440C push dagger, Fred Perrin design

Overview

The FP1802 is the all-steel push dagger in the series drawn by Fred Perrin: 101 mm overall, cut from a single block, double-edged blade included. Blade and handle are cut from a single block of 440C steel, a one-piece build with no assembly, no screws and no bonding anywhere: the object runs uninterrupted from the tip to the cross handle. The 3 mm blade stock gives the piece a crisp, clearly readable section, for a weight of just 32 grams. A moulded kydex sheath comes with it.

The T-shaped geometry

A push dagger is recognised by one point of form: its handle sits perpendicular to the blade instead of extending its axis, and is held across the palm. That arrangement produces the T-shaped outline which sets it apart from every other knife format. Fred Perrin, a French knifemaker and designer at work since the early 1990s, gives it a stripped-back reading here: one single material from end to end, with no scales and no added parts. The FP1802 is the longest version of it.

Technical specifications

The supplied sheath is kydex, a thermoplastic moulded to the exact outline of the piece and holding it by the tension of the material alone. These figures make the FP1802 the most generous format among the Fred Perrin push daggers issued by Max Knives.

Care

440C is a high-chromium stainless steel: it copes well with ambient humidity, provided you wipe it after every contact with water. Dry both blade and handle before returning them to the sheath, and leave a very light film of knife oil over the whole surface before long storage. The kydex is cleaned with lukewarm water and left to air dry; it absorbs no moisture and keeps its shape. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which would mark the finish.
