Overview

The Confusion is named for what defines it: there is no single way to hold it. The design, by Fred Perrin and Michael Janich, provides several purchase points for the fingers, so the same object changes function depending on how you grip it. This version takes the idea to its conclusion by removing steel altogether: blade and handle are cut from a single 6 mm block of titanium.

What titanium brings

Titanium is not a variant of steel, it is a different material. It does not rust — not in seawater, not in prolonged contact with skin. It is non-magnetic. And it is lighter than steel for the same volume: 51 g here, at 6 mm thick, a mass you carry without thinking about it. A knife you can take anywhere and that crosses the years asking for nothing: exactly what a limited edition should be.

One-piece anodized titanium construction, blade and handle in a single part. 6 mm thick. Edge length 63 mm, overall length 133 mm. Weight 51 g. Handle drilled for paracord, supplied. Rigid kydex sheath included. Limited to 200 numbered pieces.

The designers

This piece should not be credited to one maker: it came from four hands. Fred Perrin and Michael Janich designed it together, and Max Knives developed and produced it. Fred Perrin, the French knifemaker and designer, is known for compact, pared-down designs led by ergonomics. Michael Janich is an American instructor and designer whose work focuses on how clearly a grip reads. The Confusion is where the two approaches meet.

Care

This is the least demanding knife in the catalogue: titanium does not rust, and a one-piece build has nothing to strip. Rinsing with clean water and wiping dry is enough. Anodizing colours the surface without thickening it, so avoid abrasives, which would mark it. The paracord takes thirty seconds to replace.
