Max Knives MKO46DP — OTF automatic knife, 90 mm stainless blade, breaker

Overview

With 140 mm of aluminium handle, the MKO46DP is among the longest OTFs in the series when closed, and it reaches 230 mm with the blade out. That stainless steel blade measures 90 mm and leaves through the nose of the handle, in line with the hand. The fittings follow suit: a glass breaker to focus an impact onto a hard point, a reversible clip that can be moved to the right or the left depending on your hand, and a nylon sheath for belt carry.

One slider, two movements

This is what double action means. On many automatics a button takes care of releasing the blade and you then have to bring it back some other way, by hand or through a second control. Here a single slider does both: pushed forward it loads and releases the spring that throws the blade clear of the handle; pulled back it draws the blade along its rail and settles it at rest inside. The thumb never moves to a new place, it only changes direction, and the hand holding the knife needs no help from the other one to shut it again. That detail is what makes the movement reversible and quick both ways.

The blade is stainless steel and measures 90 mm. The aluminium handle gives the closed knife 140 mm, and 230 mm is stated with the blade deployed. Mechanism: OTF double action with a single slider. Care

The slider is the part you touch most: clean its channel with a dry brush or a cotton bud, because that is where the dust collects that eventually slows the travel. Then run a cloth over the stainless blade, which puts up with damp but not with the acid marks left by fruit or salt. The reversible clip comes off to change sides: take the chance to clean underneath and retighten the screws. The nylon sheath washes by hand and dries in open air.
