Overview

The SP52 is the large model in the pair of sharpening guides, the one you reach for with long blades: long kitchen knives, camp blades, full-size fixed knives. Its job fits in one sentence: it holds the angle while the blade travels down the abrasive, without harming the knife. It can be used on a whetstone or on a diamond sharpener alike, and is built from a plastic body with a ceramic bearing surface.

Angle, the other half of the job

Everyone talks about grit and almost nobody about angle, yet the two matter equally. An abrasive only builds a cutting edge if the blade meets it at the same inclination every time; when the angle drifts from pass to pass, you cut several facets instead of one and the edge never arrives. On a long blade the wrist turns all the more easily because the stroke is long. That is exactly what the guide removes: it fixes the inclination and leaves you only the passes to count.

Care

Rinse the guide under clean water after a sharpening session, especially if you have worked on a water stone: sharpening slurry dries fast and settles in. Wipe the plastic body and the ceramic rest afterwards, then let both dry before storing. Check now and then that the contact area stays clean, because a single metal particle trapped underneath is enough to lift the guide off its bearing and skew the angle.
