Max Knives SP53 — Small sharpening angle guide for short blades

Overview

The SP53 applies the sharpening-guide principle at the scale of small blades: pocket knives, paring knives, everyday folders. Plastic body, ceramic bearing surface, use on a whetstone or on a diamond sharpener, exactly like its larger sibling the SP52. What changes is the size of the knives it accompanies, and the space it takes up in a drawer or in a sharpening kit you carry with you.

Why a short blade is harder to hold

A small blade forgives less than a long one. The stroke is short, the hand has little travel in which to settle, and the slightest turn of the wrist shows up immediately as a change of angle over those few centimetres of edge. The result is a rounded bevel, different at the heel and at the tip, that cuts only in places. The guide imposes the same inclination from the start of the pass to its end, so the edge forms along the whole blade rather than in patches.

Care

A rinse under clean water after each session is enough to clear the sharpening slurry and the metal particles. Wipe the plastic body and the ceramic rest afterwards, then let both air dry before storing the guide alongside your stones. Because it is small, it disappears easily: giving it a fixed place in the sharpening kit, next to the knife it serves most often, is the best care it can get.
