Overview

Light, short, fully equipped: the MKO48DP fits into 102 mm of black anodised aluminium handle and weighs 78 g. Its 70 mm D2 blade, 3 mm thick, follows the drop point drawing that remains the most versatile in the range, with a clean belly for slicing and a low tip that follows the hand. The knife opens automatically and then measures 172 mm. It carries a belt clip and a glass breaker, and its nylon sheath allows belt carry when the clothing does not suit a pocket.

What a glass breaker is for

The hard point extending the handle is not decoration. A car side window is made of tempered glass: it copes very well with spread impacts such as a punch or a shoulder, but gives way instantly when a hard point concentrates all the force onto a few square millimetres. That is exactly what a glass breaker does, and it explains its position at the butt of the handle: you strike with the knife closed, on the side away from the blade, aiming at a corner of the pane rather than its centre. On a knife kept in a car or a response bag, that point turns a cutting tool into a way out.

Care

Cardboard, tape and plastic ties foul the heel of the blade and the area where it enters the handle above all: that is where the cloth should go, with a dry cotton bud to help if needed. The D2 blade gets dried after every contact with water, then a veil of oil if the knife is going into storage. Keep the glass breaker clean and free of paint or stuck residue so the point stays crisp. Finally, avoid leaving a damp nylon sheath wrapped around the knife, since the steel dislikes being shut in.
