Overview

The black version of the house key-ring knife, the MK117B is easy to forget at the bottom of a pocket until the moment you need it. The 50 mm 440C drop point blade swings out of a 75 mm 420J2 stainless handle and brings the knife to 120 mm open. Twenty grams and a 1.5 mm blade: this format joins a ring of house, car or workshop keys without unbalancing it.

Slip detent locking, held by a spring

Detent locking uses no moving liner: a spring presses on the tang and holds the blade firmly in both of its positions, open and closed. Passing the detent takes a clear, deliberate effort, which is exactly the point. In practice you get a knife that does not gape open in a pocket and that closes with one decisive push of the thumb, with no button to find and no liner to shift aside first.

Care

A black finish lasts best when abrasion is avoided: skip scouring pads in favour of a soft, slightly damp cloth. Dry the knife as soon as it has met water, starting with the joint. A drop of light oil on the pivot maintains the firmness of the detent, which works on every opening. Bring the edge back with short passes on a fine stone rather than aggressive removal of steel.
