Max Knives MK146 — Assisted Serrated Folder With Paracord Lanyard

Overview

The MK146 measures 215 mm open and 125 mm closed, a large folder format that still handles easily. Its black 3Cr13 drop point blade is 88 mm long and 2.5 mm thick, with serrations along part of the edge. The handle is aluminium, the opening assisted, the lock a liner lock, and the knife carries a belt clip, a glass breaker and a belt cutter. To all of that it adds one detail the other models in the series do not have: a paracord lanyard fitted to the handle.

The paracord lanyard

Paracord is a light braided cord with a tubular sheath over inner strands, borrowed from parachute rigging. Fitted as a lanyard at the butt of a handle, it does three concrete jobs. Looped around a finger or a wrist, it holds the knife when your hand is wet. Pulled out of a pocket or a pack, it brings the handle up into your palm without you having to hunt for the right grip. And like any paracord, its few tens of centimetres remain a reserve of cordage, there to be unpicked the day you need to tie, hang or repair something.

Care

Wash the lanyard separately in warm soapy water and let it dry in open air before refitting it: paracord stored damp against a handle keeps moisture where you least want it. For the blade, dry after every wet use and keep the pivot clean, since an assisted action has no love for pocket fibres. The serrated portion of the edge is maintained scallop by scallop with a tapered ceramic rod, while the plain portion is brought back on an ordinary stone at a constant angle.
