Max Knives P32BK — Black 440C butterfly knife, cut-out handles

Overview

Everything is black on the P32BK, from the 100 mm drop-point blade to the two stainless steel half-handles that frame it. Those handles are heavily cut away: large ovals run one after another along their length and let you see the blade through them when the knife is shut. Closed it measures 133 mm; open, with the handles folded against one another, it reaches 226 mm. The blade steel is 440C, a stainless grade with a high carbon content.

Handles pierced with large ovals

The ovals running through the handles are more than decoration. Every opening removes material from a piece of stainless steel, so the set of cut-outs makes the knife lighter than two solid plates of the same size would be. The edges of those windows can be felt under the fingers and give regular landmarks along the grip. They also change how the knife reads: closed, the eye follows the line of the black blade through the openings; open, the two rows of ovals line up into a grip that is pierced from end to end.

Care

A soft dry cloth is enough day to day: wipe the blade, then work into the cut-outs, where dust always ends up settling. Keep scouring powder and abrasive pads away, as they would mark the black finish on the handles and the blade. Two drops of light oil, one per pivot, keep the rotation sweet. If the knife has been handled at length, dry it before putting it away: perspiration remains the main enemy of any steel, stainless included.
