The balisong, in two lines

A butterfly knife — balisong, from its Filipino name — has no spring and no spring-loaded lock: the blade sits between two handles hinged on two pivots, and it is the rotation of those handles that frees or stows it. A latch holds it closed or open. That is where the whole fascination lies: opening is not a mechanism you trigger, it is a movement you learn.

Why an unsharpened blade

Learning to handle a balisong means repeating rotations that pass close to the fingers until they become automatic. The P33B is built for that stage: its stainless blade is left unsharpened, with the same profile, the same weight and the same balance as a cutting blade. You practise the flips under identical conditions, calmly, and the movement transfers straight across afterwards.

Balance, what makes a good balisong

On a balisong everything comes down to how mass is shared between blade and handles. Aluminium handles like these give a lively knife that pivots quickly and tires the wrist slowly over a long session — exactly what learning calls for. Steel-handled models, heavier, give a broader and more deliberate rotation.

Care

The two pivots are the only moving parts: a drop of light oil on each, now and then, keeps the rotation free and quiet. Check the pivot and latch screws regularly, since they work on every flip. A cloth handles the rest.
