Max Knives MK510 — Double edged 440C fixed blade, micarta grip

Overview

The MK510 sets itself apart from its three line mates from the first grip: where the MK511, MK512 and MK513 receive a G10 handle, this one is dressed in micarta over 108 mm. The 132 mm 440C blade is symmetrical, double edged, and cut from stock 4,9 mm thick. The stone washed black finish darkens the whole piece. The knife measures 240 mm overall, weighs 304 g and travels in a kydex sheath fitted with paracord.

Micarta, a handle material of its own

Micarta is born from layers of fabric soaked in resin and pressed together. The resulting block is worked like a solid material: shaped, sanded, and the pattern of the layers surfaces as it goes. Its signature is the feel, matt and slightly grainy, which gains grip when the hand is damp instead of losing it. On a 304 g fixed blade like the MK510, that natural bite counts as much as the curves drawn into the handle.

Care

Dry the blade after every outing and lay a film of oil on both faces: on a double edged blade, both edges deserve equal attention. Micarta cleans with warm water and a soft brush, without aggressive solvents that would attack the resin. The paracord on the sheath can be rinsed and left to dry slack before going back on, and the kydex should be emptied of the sand and dust that settle inside over successive trips.
