Max Knives PA29 — One-finger zinc impact tool with skull motif

Overview

The PA29 is a one-finger zinc model whose entire face is taken up by a skull in relief. Its 72 mm length makes it one of the longest designs to call on a single finger, at 37 mm high and 10 mm thick at most. The ring measures 27 mm inside, the most generous figure in this selection, which points it towards larger fingers. The skull is no applied decoration: it grows straight out of the shape of the body.

Cast zinc and fine detail

Zinc melts at low temperature and flows readily into a mould, which explains its presence on objects with sculpted motifs. The liquid metal fills the smallest hollows of the impression, so details a tenth of a millimetre across, a cranial suture, the ridge of a tooth, the rim of an eye socket, come out crisp on the cooled piece. The same drawing machined from solid would take hours of milling and would round off the internal angles that casting reproduces effortlessly. On the PA29 the process yields firm relief across the whole surface, with shadows that bring the skull to life as the lighting changes.

Care

Zinc dulls slowly in air and takes on a faintly matt grey, which is normal for the metal. A soft dry cloth covers day-to-day upkeep; a soft-bristled brush clears dust caught in the sockets and between the teeth, where cloth cannot reach. Avoid acidic products and descalers, which are harsh on this metal, along with long spells in damp air. Dry thoroughly after any wash.
