Max Knives TIKNU6 — Satin titanium pocket tool, carbide glass breaker

Overview

The TIKNU6 opens the TIKNU series, the solid titanium line of the catalogue. This one is machined entirely from the metal, with nothing bolted or bonded on, and wears a satin finish: no added colour, just the mineral grey of titanium turned matt and even by satining. Fifteen millimetres of thickness give it real presence in the palm, and a tungsten carbide glass breaker closes off the body. The drawing is signed by P. SUPPER and is covered by a registered design; the piece is issued as a limited edition.

Tungsten carbide, harder than glass

The glass breaker is not titanium like the rest of the piece but tungsten carbide, a compound made by sintering metal and ceramic powders together. Its hardness sits far above that of common steels and, above all, above that of toughened glass: such glass does not scratch, it lets go at once as soon as a point harder than itself concentrates the load on a tiny area. That is why a few millimetres of tip do the work where a flat face would achieve nothing. Carbide has the further advantage of keeping its edge over time, where a softer metal point would eventually round off.

Technical specifications

A piece machined 100 % from titanium, in a satin finish, with no anodising and no colour treatment. The stated thickness is 15 mm, a generous figure for a pocket object of this kind. The glass breaker built into the body is tungsten carbide. The design is by P. SUPPER and is protected by a registered design. The TIKNU6 is sold as a limited edition.

Care

Titanium does not rust and asks for neither oil nor grease: a dry cloth after a day in the pocket is enough to lift dust and fingerprints. The satin finish comes back to life with a soft textile worked along the grain; keep abrasive pastes and scouring pads away, as they would leave bright marks across the satining. Wipe the carbide point after any contact with water, and store the piece away from keys, which would mark its surface.
