Overview

Past a certain size a fixed blade stops being a pocket object and becomes a tool you wear on a belt. The Assaulyte Compact is one of those: 220 mm overall, 188 g, a 100 mm clip-point blade that gives a fine tip without giving up the belly of the edge. The black G10 handle grips without slipping in a wet hand — which is exactly what the material is used for.

The clip point, in practice

The spine drops in a concave sweep towards the tip, giving a finer and lower point than a drop point: you gain precision and penetration. It is the profile of the great American traditional knives, carried over here into a format that stays wearable.

Uses

440C is a high-carbon stainless: it holds a working edge and sharpens without special equipment. A 100 mm blade at 3 mm thick takes light batoning, wood preparation, webbing and cordage work. G10 moves neither in rain nor in sun, and its texture grips even in a wet hand.

Care

Wipe 440C after any wet use and store the blade dry in its kydex. G10 cleans with soapy water. Sharpening on a stone at the original angle maintains the edge; on a blade this size an angle guide makes the job quick and consistent.
