Max Knives MK501 — Double edged 440C dagger with ABS sheath, 165 g

Overview

At 180 mm overall, the MK501 stands in a category of its own among the Max Knives fixed blades. The 94 mm blade is symmetrical, edged on both flanks, and carries a satin finish that reveals the lengthwise grain of the polishing on the 440C steel. Part of the edge is serrated, the rest stays plain. The 86 mm black G10 handle makes for a long grip, almost as long as the blade, and the ABS sheath delivered with the piece provides rigid storage.

A symmetrical blade with a serrated section

A double edged blade is ground on both sides of its axis: it works on the push and on the pull alike, with no need to roll the wrist to present the right side. The serrated portion plays a specific role: its teeth catch the fibrous materials that slide under a plain edge, ropes, synthetic webbing, thick textiles. On the MK501 both treatments live side by side, letting you pick the right stretch of edge for the material in front of you.

Care

A satin finish shows fingerprints readily: a pass with a dry microfibre cloth is enough to clear them. After outdoor use, wash the blade with clean water, dry it thoroughly with attention to the serrated area where moisture sits between the teeth, then lightly oil the steel. The G10 handle takes soapy water without trouble. The ABS sheath can be rinsed and left open to dry before the dagger goes back into it.
