Overview

The MK117OR is the sort of knife you never put down, because it lives on the key ring. Closed it takes up 75 mm; open it measures 120, with a 50 mm 440C drop point blade whose gold finish catches the light. The 420J2 stainless steel handle gives it substance without loading the pocket: 20 g, barely more than a car key on the same ring.

A hollow hex key in three sizes

The handle of the MK117OR is not merely a housing for the blade: it is bored as a hollow hex key in 10 mm, 8 mm and 7 mm. Those three sizes cover a fair share of the nuts you meet with no toolbox nearby, from a bicycle saddle to a hose fitting, a furniture foot or a battery terminal. A hollow key slips over the nut rather than pinching it, taking hold on all six flats at once.

Care

A key-ring knife rubs against keys all day: wipe it regularly to clear the metallic dust that gathers in the joint, and rinse it in clean water if it has spent time in a damp pocket. Dry it thoroughly afterwards, then leave a trace of light oil on the pivot so the detent keeps its firmness. The 1.5 mm blade comes back quickly on a fine stone, with a few light passes on each side.
