Overview

The MK107G measures 135 mm closed and 187 mm with the blade deployed. That blade is 72 mm long, ground in a hawkbill profile from 440C stainless steel, with a plain edge and a 3 mm spine. The grey anodised aluminium handle carries a belt clip, and the whole knife weighs 144 grams, light enough to forget in a pocket yet substantial in the hand. Assisted opening brings the blade into position one-handed, and the liner lock holds it there while you work.

What a hawkbill blade changes

A hawkbill blade is shaped like a bird of prey beak: the spine drops towards the tip while the edge hollows into a concave arc. That curve reverses the cutting motion. Instead of pushing the blade through the material, you hook it and pull towards you; rope, webbing or plastic film slides down into the belly of the curve, where the edge bites hardest, rather than sliding away ahead of the point. It is the shape found on sailors knives and pruning hooks for exactly that reason: anything soft, taut or stringy parts more readily under a pulling cut.

Care

440C is stainless, but it is still steel: wipe the blade after use, particularly after cutting damp or salted rope, and put the knife away dry. A drop of light oil on the pivot keeps the assisted opening and the liner lock running smoothly; work it in by opening and closing the knife several times, then wipe off the excess. The anodised aluminium handle cleans with soapy water. For sharpening, a concave edge is best served by a round steel or a tapered rat-tail stone, followed along the curve from the tip back to the heel.
