Max Knives MKO42DT — Double edge automatic knife, 95 mm blade

Overview

Same aluminium handle, same automatic mechanism, same footprint as the other two MKO42 knives: what changes here is that the blade has no spine. The MKO42DT carries a double edge along its 95 mm, in stainless steel 2.7 mm thick. Closed it measures 135 mm; open, 230 mm, for 149 g. The handle is 15.20 mm thick and the pocket clip mounts on whichever side you like. It is the most symmetrical version in the series, and the one you recognise at a glance.

Two edges, one symmetrical blade

Ground on both sides: the blade tapers from its centreline down to each of its borders, so neither of them acts as a spine. The point then sits in the middle of the blade rather than off to one side, which places it exactly in line with the forearm and makes its orientation intuitive. In practice you cut on the pull or on the push without turning the knife over in your hand, and the movement stays the same whichever way up it is. The trade-off is that this shape removes the flat spine you would press a thumb against: the grip belongs on the handle, not the blade, and fingers stay clear of both edges during cleaning.

Care

Cleaning a double edge blade calls for a method: lay the cloth flat on the side and draw it towards you starting from the middle of the blade, never sliding it from one edge across to the other. Then dry each border in turn. Stainless steel copes with passing damp, not with being stored wet in its housing. As with the rest of the series, the blade channel is dusted out regularly and given a trace of fine oil; the clip screws are checked after every change of side.
