Max Knives PA20B — Folding titanium impact tool, keyring format

Overview

The PA20B is a folding titanium impact tool built to live on a keyring. Opened out it takes up 9 cm by 5; folded away it gathers into 6.5 cm by 4.8, with the same 5 mm thickness in both positions. Its colour is that of bare titanium, the faintly blue grey that comes from no paint at all. Five millimetres is about two coins stacked: the object lies flat against your keys instead of bulging in a pocket.

What folding does to bulk

A rigid impact tool imposes its footprint at all times, whereas a folding model only takes up its full area at the moment you open it. Here the gap is clear: from roughly 45 cm² open, you drop to 31 cm² once closed, a third less surface, with thickness unchanged. That is the difference between an object you store and an object you take along. The PA20B shares this logic with the PA20S, but it is the only one of the pair to work in titanium and the only one sold as a keyring format.

Care

Titanium needs no protection from corrosion, which keeps everything simple: water, soap, a cloth. The one area to watch is the pivot, where pocket dust and textile fibres eventually gather. A blast of compressed air or a pass with a fine brush clears it, followed if needed by a drop of thin oil on the axis. Dry everything before folding the piece back on itself.
