Overview

The NS145 holds the central format of the NS series: 100 mm across, the most common figure in the range, with five points and 3 mm of 420 stainless steel. The silver finish leaves the material on show. This is the silhouette the word shuriken calls to mind, the five-point rosette, and it arrives with the belt sheath shared across the series.

Why an odd number of points

Five points is an odd number, so no tip sits exactly opposite another. The consequence shows in the hand, since the piece is always held by one arm with two tips on either side, never by an aligned pair as on a cross. The outline, meanwhile, is more regular than that of a four-point star of the same diameter: the gaps between tips are shorter, and the rosette presents a point to the target more often through the rotation.

Technical specifications

Five points around the centre, overall diameter of 100 mm, plate 3 mm thick. 420 stainless steel in a silver finish. Belt sheath delivered with the star. No figure is published for the weight of this star. Three further five-point pieces appear in the range, the NS135 in blue titanium at 90 mm, the rounded NS146 and the NS152 at 90 mm, which makes four five-point stars running from 90 to 100 mm.

Care

Silver hides nothing: a fingerprint shows, so does wood dust, and a soft cloth removes both at the end of a session. After an outdoor throw, rinse the star if soil has worked its way between the arms, dry it completely, then apply a film of light oil on both faces. Empty the belt sheath of its debris now and then, so that nothing rubs the piece once stored.
