Max Knives MKO8 — Automatic knife, 88 mm D2 drop point blade

Overview

The MKO8 plays the card of useful length: 88 mm of blade, 3 mm thick, 208 mm of open knife and 113 g spread through a 120 mm handle. The drop point profile, with its lowered tip and steady belly, puts that length to work slicing: a blade of nearly nine centimetres goes through a rope, a stack of cardboard or a piece of meat in one pass, where a short blade forces you to saw. The handle is black anodised aircraft aluminium, and a nylon sheath is supplied.

Anodised aircraft aluminium

Behind that name sit the aluminium alloys used in aircraft construction, chosen for a strength-to-weight ratio pure aluminium never reaches. On a knife handle the benefit is obvious the moment you weigh it in the hand: you get a rigid shell that does not flex in the grip and shrugs off site knocks, without the mass of a steel handle. The anodising applied afterwards is not paint laid on the surface but an oxide layer grown within the metal itself, which is why it does not flake and why it protects the handle for the long term. The resulting matt black throws back no light and hides fingerprints.

Care

On an 88 mm blade, wiping is done in two stages rather than one quick sweep: the heel first, where cutting residue collects, then the rest of the length up to the tip. D2 tolerates leftover damp poorly, so dry it before closing and oil it lightly as soon as the knife stops being a daily companion. Anodised aluminium cleans in warm soapy water with no abrasive. Finally, a nylon sheath put away wet ends up smelling and passing that moisture to the handle: better to hang it in the air after an outing in the rain.
