Max Knives P58S — Silver clip point butterfly knife, 97 mm blade

Overview

The P58S restates the 97 mm clip point balisong in bare steel. The round holes running through the handles read in full light here, each one revealing the thickness of the metal and the channel inside. The 2.31 mm silver blade carries that bright finish along the whole length. The knife weighs 102 g, measures 125 mm folded and 214 mm once the latch has locked the grip together. It is the bright version of the P58B, to identical figures.

From 125 to 214 mm: the closed-to-open ratio

This is what the butterfly architecture is really about: the knife does not just present a blade, it changes format. Closed, the P58S fits inside 125 mm, roughly the length of a large key or a pen, because the blade occupies the space between the handles instead of adding to them. Open, those same handles travel outward, meet again behind the blade and form a grip as long as the handle itself, for a total of 214 mm. A conventional folder has to house its blade inside the handle and can therefore never be shorter than it; the balisong traps it between two halves and gains 89 mm on deployment.

Care

Bare steel shows everything: fingerprints, dust caught in the drillings, residue around the screw heads. None of it matters, and a microfibre cloth restores the original look in a few passes. For the holes, a slightly damp cotton bud followed by immediate drying does the job. On the pivots, choose a thin oil rather than a heavy lubricant, which would weigh the rotation down instead of freeing it.
