The Big Flip is a registered-design rotating folder: the handle swings on its pivot to release a 46 mm 440C drop point blade. Steel throughout, handle included, at 59 g and 136 mm open.
Overview
The 14688G is the larger of the two Max Knives rotating flip folders, a registered design whose mechanism sits inside the handle itself. Its 46 mm drop point blade is cut from 440C steel, and so is the handle: the whole knife is steel, with no scales added over a frame, which is what gives it its smooth outline and its 90 mm closed footprint. The silver finish leaves the steel visible across the entire piece, blade and handle alike. A belt clip is fitted to the handle so it rides in a pocket and comes back to the same place every time.
How the rotating flip works
On a conventional folder the blade pivots and the handle stays put. Here it is the other way round: the handle turns on its axis and frees the blade, which ends up in line with your hand. The move is done one-handed, with a push of the thumb, and reverses the same way to close the knife again. That movement is what the registered design covers: the all-steel construction and the swinging handle belong to this series and to no other. On the big format the travel is longer than on the Small Flip, and you feel more of the movement.
Technical specifications
Drop point blade in 440C steel, plain edge, 46 mm long and 2 mm thick. The drop point profile brings the spine down towards the tip, which stays in line with the cutting edge. Handle in 440C steel as well, silver finish, 90 mm long, which is also the closed length of the knife. Overall open length: 136 mm. Weight: 59 g. Belt clip mounted on the handle. Registered design.
Care
440C is a stainless steel: it copes with damp, but a knife that gets wiped after use lasts longer than one put away wet. Run a dry cloth over the blade and the handle after each outing, especially if you have been cutting acidic food or working near salt water. A drop of light oil on the pivot now and then keeps the handle turning cleanly. For sharpening, a stone or a ceramic rod is enough: follow the original edge angle rather than grinding a new one.
Legal notice. Carrying a knife in public without a legitimate reason is an offence in France and in most European countries. Check the law that applies where the order is delivered before purchasing.
