Overview
The MINI5-BKD is the black version of a small series of OTF automatic knives. Everything matches: the 440C steel blade carries a black finish, the zinc and aluminium alloy handle takes the same dark colour, and the whole knife measures no more than 144 mm with the blade deployed. Closed, it comes down to the length of its handle, 84 mm, which places it among the genuinely compact automatics. Its pocket clip attaches to clothing or to compatible gear.
How an OTF works
OTF stands for out the front: the blade does not pivot on an axis, it slides inside the handle and emerges from the front. On the MINI5-BKD a single push button drives both movements. Push it forward and the blade deploys and locks; draw it back and the blade returns into the handle. That single control is worked one-handed, thumb on the button, without changing your grip. This is what sets an OTF apart from a conventional folder, whose blade sweeps through an arc and needs clear space around it.
Technical specifications
The blade measures 60 mm and is made from 440C steel with a black finish. Its edge is plain along its full length. The handle measures 84 mm and is made from a zinc and aluminium alloy in a black colour matching the blade. With the blade out, the knife reaches 144 mm overall. It weighs 67 g. Locking is handled by the OTF automatic mechanism itself, whose push button controls both the deployment and the retraction of the blade. A pocket clip is built into the handle.
Care
An OTF mainly asks that you keep clean the rail in which the blade slides. After use, wipe the blade with a dry cloth before retracting it, so that no moisture or dust is shut inside the handle. 440C is a stainless steel, but it remains sensitive to prolonged exposure to salt water or to acidic products: a wipe with a cloth is enough to protect it. A drop of fine oil on the mechanism, once or twice a year, keeps the travel smooth. Bring the edge back on a fine-grit stone when the cut loses its bite.
Legal notice. Age-restricted item (18+). In France this knife is a Category D item: legal to sell but reserved for adults, with age verification at checkout. Automatic and OTF knives are restricted or prohibited in many countries — the United Kingdom, Germany and several US states among them. It is the buyer's responsibility to check the law that applies where the order is delivered before purchasing.
