Overview

The MINI5-RDD is the red version of the MINI5 series. The red finish is carried by the 440C steel blade as well as by the zinc and aluminium alloy handle, which gives the knife a continuous shade across its 144 mm when deployed. The handle measures 84 mm, which is also the knife's footprint with the blade retracted, and the whole weighs 67 g. The 60 mm blade comes out of the front of the handle under the command of a push button. A pocket clip is fitted to the handle.

The zinc and aluminium alloy handle

The handle of the MINI5-RDD is neither wood nor a synthetic material: it is a zinc and aluminium alloy. That choice has a direct consequence on an OTF, whose handle is not a simple shell but the housing for the sliding rail and the spring. A metal handle holds its dimensions and takes the back and forth of the mechanism. The alloy also lends itself well to coloured finishes, which is why the red of the handle answers exactly the red of the blade on this model.

Care

Keep the sliding rail clean: on an OTF that is what governs how evenly the action runs. The useful habit amounts to little, wipe the blade dry before retracting it, so that no moisture or grit is shut inside the handle. 440C steel is stainless; a cloth after contact with salt water or acidic food is enough to protect it. A drop of fine oil on the mechanism once a year keeps things smooth. Bring the edge back on a fine-grit stone, keeping the original angle.
