Max Knives MK136 — Butterfly knife with interchangeable blades

Overview

The MK136 is the largest butterfly knife in the Max Knives catalogue and the only one that comes apart: it arrives with several blades that swap onto a single handle. Closed it measures 145 mm; assembled it reaches 248 to 253 mm overall depending on the blade fitted. The stainless steel handle, 12 mm thick, weighs 113 g on its own and 141 g once the knife is complete. Two handle halves, two pivots, one latch: butterfly mechanics at the most generous scale in the range.

Four blades, one handle

The MK136 ships with a set of interchangeable blades: a drop point, a comb, a screwdriver and a trainer blade. The last one is the key to the system. With no cutting edge, it lets you work on rotations, grips and sequences safely, then fit the cutting blade once the movement is learned. The comb and the screwdriver turn the same handle into something altogether different from a knife. Depending on the blade fitted, blade length runs from 103 to 108 mm and overall length from 248 to 253 mm.

Care

A modular knife also needs its hardware looked after: after every blade change, check that the fixing screws and the pivots are properly tightened before handling the knife. The stainless steel blades should be wiped after use and stored dry; blades that are not fitted are best kept flat and separated from one another. A drop of fine oil on each pivot, spread by a few rotations, keeps the movement even on a handle of this size.
