Overview

The SP46 is a small diamond sharpener meant to live on a keyring. It measures 8,3 cm by 5,2 cm, is only 1,5 mm thick and comes with its fixing ring, ready to go onto car keys, a rucksack loop or the strap of a work vest. Its diamond face runs at 300 grit, the grit of a real correction: the one that straightens a cutting edge rather than the one that fine-tunes an edge already in good order.

The sharpener that is always with you

The best sharpener is the one in your pocket the moment the blade starts to drag. On a site, at a camp, in a makeshift kitchen, nobody walks home to fetch a stone; they keep cutting with a knife that works less and less. The ring is what changes that. Clipped to the keys, the SP46 ends up in the same pocket as the knife itself, and the edge gets picked up on the spot, in a few passes, before it goes too far.

Technical specifications

Diamond plate 8,3 cm long by 5,2 cm wide and 1,5 mm thick, 300 grit. A fixing ring is included for mounting on a keyring or a loop. Those dimensions make a genuinely flat object: it adds no bulk in a pocket and still sits flat on a table to work. The 300 grit belongs to the cutting grits, the ones that take metal off, rather than to the fine grits that only polish a bevel already formed.

Care

Rinse the abrasive face under clean water after sharpening, long enough to flush the metal dust away, then dry the plate before putting it back on the keys. Because the SP46 lives outdoors, in pockets and against keys, a regular wipe keeps moisture from sitting on it. Check the ring from time to time as well, simply to make sure it is still properly closed around the keyring.
