Max Knives SP41 Quattro — Mini 440C folding knife, leather sheath

Overview

The SP41 goes by the name Quattro Mini Pliant and plays the compact card: 87 mm in the pocket, 150 mm once open, with a 55 mm blade in 440C steel. Its handle is made from the same steel, giving a knife of one piece and one material, with no applied scales. Two carry modes are on offer, on the belt clip or in the leather sheath supplied, depending on the day's clothing.

Leather, the other way to carry

A belt clip shows the knife off and keeps it instantly reachable; a leather sheath protects it, keeps it apart from keys and cushions knocks inside a bag. The SP41 offers both, which is rarer than it sounds in a mini format. Leather also has the advantage of ageing: it takes on a patina, moulds to the outline of the knife and ends up presenting the blade in the same position every time.

Care

440C steel asks for a wipe after use and careful drying if the knife has met water. The leather sheath needs a little more attention: keep it out of direct sun, let it dry naturally when damp and feed it once a year with a suitable balm. Avoid storing the knife wet inside its sheath, so the leather stays sound on the inside as well as the outside.
