Max Knives NS143 — 4-point throwing star, 125 mm, 420 stainless

Overview

The NS143 pushes the four-point cross out to 125 mm, the biggest figure in the NS series. The arms are long, the gaps between them wide, and the piece is held in a full hand rather than between two fingers. Three millimetres of 420 stainless steel keep the plate stiff across that span, in a silver finish. Like the other large formats of the range, the star ships with its belt sheath.

What a 125 mm diameter changes

Diameter is the first thing you feel when picking up a star. At 125 mm the NS143 clearly overhangs the palm: you hold it by one arm, thumb and finger on either side of the plate, and the movement starts from further out. On the target, a large star also presents its points earlier in the rotation, since the radius is longer. Laid flat in a collection it sets the scale, and the 76, 90 and 100 mm pieces are read against it.

Among the four-point stars of the series, diameters run from 100 mm on the NS150 up to 125 mm here, by way of 101, 110 and 112 mm, with the NS143 at the top.

Care

A large flat surface gets dirty all over, not only at the tips: run the cloth from the hub out to the end of each arm, four strokes in all. 420 stainless is content with a dry wipe after an indoor session, and asks for a rinse and a full dry after a muddy outing. Finish with a veil of light oil, then return the star to its sheath once the metal is thoroughly dry.
