Overview

The MKTIMONB is a money clip cut from titanium, with a narrow wedge-shaped silhouette. Its face carries two grooves machined along its length, together with a logo engraved in the clear. This version is anodised blue: deep blue across the flats, lightening along the edges where the light catches. It weighs 15 g and rides in the front pocket of a pair of trousers, an alternative to the traditional wallet that keeps the essential function without the bulk that goes with it.

Anodising: colour grown from oxide

Anodising titanium is neither painting nor dyeing. The piece is placed in a bath and put under an electrical voltage, which grows an oxide layer a few tens of nanometres thick on its surface. Light passing through that layer reflects at two different depths, and the shift between them produces a hue: the colour depends purely on the thickness obtained. That is why the blue changes in intensity depending on the angle you look from, and why it belongs to the metal rather than sitting on top of it.

Care

Titanium minds neither water nor perspiration: warm water, a little mild soap, a rinse and a wipe with a cloth bring the shine straight back. Run the cloth along the direction of the grooves to lift the pocket dust that settles there. Keep polishing creams, steel wool and abrasive pads away, since the hue rests on a very thin oxide layer that is best left untouched. A microfibre cloth, of the kind used for glasses, remains the right tool.
