Overview

Where most balisongs in the range use aluminium handles, the P53S is steel throughout — blade and handles. The polished silver finish gives it the classic look of the earliest butterfly knives, the one people picture. It is also the most compact of our cutting balisongs at 117 mm closed and 215 mm open. Its handles are pierced with a pattern of round perforations in varying sizes, which lighten the knife and catch the light at every rotation.

What steel handles change

Handle material is the real deciding factor between two balisongs. Steel is considerably denser than aluminium: the knife gains mass at its extremities, and that mass carries the rotation. The movement becomes broader, steadier, easier to control in slow figures; you feel the object in hand from the start of the motion to the end. It is the sensation sought by anyone who learned on steel butterflies.

3Cr13 spear-point blade, silver finish, 98 mm long. Stainless-steel handles, silver finish, perforated. Closed length 117 mm, overall length open 215 mm. Two-pivot balisong mechanism with latch. Weight approximately 105 g.

The compact format

One hundred and seventeen millimetres closed is the size that genuinely fits an average hand with the handles held together. On a butterfly knife that shortens the travel of each rotation and makes sequences quicker to run: the format for fast figures and long sessions.

Care

Two pivots, one latch: a drop of light oil on each pivot and a regular check of the screws is all it needs. Polished stainless cleans with a cloth; fingerprints show more than on a black finish, and come off more easily too.
