Overview

The Lancer knife is built for a sport: knife throwing at a wooden target, from a set distance. Fred Perrin drew it for Max Knives in one continuous piece, from a 5 mm bar of 420J2 stainless steel: 272 mm overall, of which 146 mm is blade and 126 mm handle. Those figures make it the longest piece in the whole family he signs for the brand, ahead of the FP1801 Bowie and its 260 mm. The blade follows a Bowie profile in a stone wash finish, the handle is drilled to take a paracord, and the kydex sheath supplied carries a multi-position tech lock clip.

Balance, and a steel chosen to take knocks

In throwing, it is the consistency of the gesture that sets the blade, and everything rests on how the mass is distributed. The FP1906 is one piece: the same 5 mm bar forms the 146 mm blade and the 126 mm handle, two nearly equal lengths, with no scales and no assembly to shift the centre of gravity. The thrower therefore finds the same rotation on every release. The choice of 420J2 follows the same logic: this low-carbon stainless is softer than the steels made for cutting, yet it takes repeated impacts into wood without splitting. It is that resistance to shock, rather than edge holding, that the piece is asked for.

Care

A throwing knife spends part of its life on the ground: start by clearing the soil and dust away under clear water, then dry it with a cloth. 420J2 is stainless, but the 5 mm spine and the corners of the handle hold moisture: dry them before storing the piece, and wipe on a light film of fine oil if it is to stay sheathed for a long while. The stone wash finish asks only for a soft cloth, with no abrasive. Check the tech lock screws now and then, since they work at every clip-on, and rinse the kydex in lukewarm water.
