Max Knives FP1801 — 440C Bowie fixed blade, 150 mm, G10, kydex sheath

Overview

The FP1801 opens the run of Bowies Fred Perrin designed for Max Knives, and it is the largest piece in his range with the brand: 260 mm overall, with a 150 mm blade. The blade is cut from 440C with a plain edge and an even stone wash finish, and it measures 5 mm at the spine, the thickest steel in the family. The handle is G10. The kydex sheath supplied takes a multi-position tecklock attachment. This is the production model the numbered pieces are drawn from.

What a Bowie blade does

The Bowie outline is recognised by its clip point: the spine runs straight for most of its length, then curves down to the tip over the last third, as though the profile had been pinched. That drawing brings the point back towards the centre line of the blade and slims it, which gives bite when starting a cut or working around a shape, while the generous belly behind it keeps its full length for slicing on the pull. Over 150 mm of edge the consequence is clear: a precise point up front, a clean cutting zone behind, and one tool that moves between the two without changing grip.

Care

440C is a stainless steel, which is no reason to skip drying it. After use, rinse the blade under clean water, dry it straight away and wipe a light film of oil along the edge if the knife is going into storage. The stone wash finish has the advantage of folding micro-scratches into its own grain: a soft cloth is all it asks, never an abrasive paste. Empty the kydex sheath of sand and dust before putting the blade back, and check the tecklock screws for tightness now and then.
