Max Knives FPGTPLTB — folding Tanto Griffe, blue titanium ring

Overview

The FPGTPLTB pairs the 45 mm tanto blade in 440C steel, with its clean angle at the point, and a blue anodised titanium ring whose diameter can be set. The G10 handle measures 80 mm and gives the closed footprint of the knife; open, the whole thing is 125 mm for 59 g, on a blade 3.5 mm thick. Since the early 1990s that small ring has been the most recognisable signature in Fred Perrin's work, and here it comes to colour a folder. The piece belongs to the numbered First Run series and travels in a kydex neck sheath.

The kydex neck sheath

Kydex is a thermoplastic sheet that is heated and then formed directly over the piece it will hold: the sheath takes the exact print of the knife and retains it by pressure on its sides alone, with no strap and no stud. The material does not soak up water, does not distort in ordinary use and rinses under the tap. On this model the sheath is drilled to take a paracord and be worn around the neck, flat against the chest: the knife stays in line with the sternum, on an axis where the hand finds it again without having to search.

Care

Store a dry knife in a dry sheath: that is the rule that counts most on a folder carried close to the body, where the day's moisture ends up settling. Wipe the 440C blade, leave the joint open for a few minutes, then lay on a film of neutral oil before folding it back. The blue ring and the G10 handle clean with warm soapy water, a soft cloth and nothing abrasive. The paracord unties for washing.
