Max Knives MKH01S — μSepia silver Torpen one-piece N690 pocket knife

Overview

This is the silver version of the microSepia, the small knife drawn by Jérôme Hovaere for Torpen and produced with Max Knives. Here the N690 steel is left bare: the same one-piece build as the black version, but in the light tone of the steel itself. One hundred millimetres open, 42 grams, a 35 mm sheepfoot blade held by a slip joint. A key ring knife, made to be there every day rather than to draw attention.

The slip joint, a mechanism with nothing to spare

On the microSepia the blade is held neither by a liner nor by a back lock: it runs on a slip joint. A spring presses constantly on the heel of the blade and asks for a firm, deliberate effort to bring it out and to close it again. The mechanism uses very few parts, which is what allows the slim shape and the single-piece construction. The dual purpose the designer had in mind follows the same logic: key ring knife or money clip, with nothing added to the object.

Technical specifications

The silver microSepia is made from one single piece of stainless N690 steel, blade and handle included. The blade is a 35 mm sheepfoot with a plain edge and 3 mm of thickness. The handle measures 50 mm, the overall open length 100 mm, and the blade is held by a slip joint. On the scale it reads 42 grams.

Care

A dry cloth after use is enough to keep the N690 steel clean, and the bare steel finish comes back with a simple wipe. Dry the three holes in the body and the pivot area carefully after any contact with water. A trace of fine oil on the pivot keeps the slip joint smooth over hundreds of openings. For the edge, a fine-grit stone and a few passes at the original angle bring it back to where it should be.
