Max Knives FP1801-138 — 440C Bowie and kydex sheath, piece No. 138

Overview

Numbered 138, this Bowie repeats the FP1801 point for point: a 150 mm blade in 440C steel, plain edge, stone wash finish, 5 mm at the spine, a 95 mm G10 handle, 260 mm overall. What comes with the blade deserves as much attention here as the blade itself: the sheath is moulded from kydex and takes a tecklock, a multi-position system that lets you choose how the knife rides. A knife of this size is judged partly on the way it travels.

The kydex sheath and the tecklock mount

Kydex is a thermoplastic sheet, heated and then formed directly over the blade: the sheath takes the exact profile of the knife and holds it by pressure on its flanks alone. The retention is audible, a clean click on insertion, and it lasts because the material takes on no water, dries without distorting and pays no attention to sand or dust. The tecklock fitted to it screws onto the sheath and then clips over a belt or a strap; it comes apart and repositions, so the angle and the height of carry can be set to the space available.

Care

Care starts here with the sheath: clear out the grains of sand and dust that a stored blade meets most often. Kydex rinses under water and dries in open air. Check the tecklock screws now and then, since they work every time the mount is clipped on. For the blade, rinse and dry after use, oil lightly before long storage; 440C is stainless and the stone wash finish wants nothing more than a soft cloth.
