Max Knives PA27 — One-finger glow-in-the-dark resin impact tool

Overview

The PA27 is the only non-metal one-finger model in the selection: its body is moulded in phosphorescent resin, a material that gives back in darkness the light it has taken in. The piece measures 54 mm long by 37 mm high, with thickness rising to 16 mm at its strongest point, and a ring 25 mm across. By day the resin shows a pale tone; by night it announces its position without your having to hunt for it.

A material that recharges in light

Phosphorescence is no built-in energy store: the resin holds pigments that absorb incoming photons, bank that energy by exciting their electrons, then release it slowly as visible light. The stronger the exposure, the longer the return; a few minutes in daylight or under a lamp are enough to restart the cycle, which repeats indefinitely. Intensity tapers through the night, very bright for the first minutes and then a soft halo. In practice the object stays findable at the bottom of a sleeping bag, in a dark drawer or in a car boot.

Care

The resin cleans with warm soapy water and dries on a soft cloth. Keep solvents, alcohol and acetone away, as they dull plastics and can affect the pigments held through the material. To bring the glow back to full strength, simply leave the piece in bright light for a few minutes before taking it out: a clean surface with no greasy film gives back far more than a soiled one. Store it clear of deep scratches, which hold dirt.
