Overview

The MC006DP is a Japanese fixed blade, released as a limited edition with Max Knives and made in 50 numbered pieces. It measures 184 mm overall, with an 88 mm cutting edge in VG10 San Mai, 3 mm thick, in a drop point shape. The 96 mm handle carries quince wood burl inserts. Mokume completes the composition. The piece is supplied with a leather sheath and a wooden presentation box.

San Mai, mokume, quince burl

San Mai is the classic Japanese three-layer construction: a hard VG10 core that carries the edge, sandwiched between two softer steel flanks that absorb stress. The weld line stays visible along the blade. Mokume-gane is something else again, a laminate of different metals forged and then polished: the strata cross and draw veins that call wood to mind, which is exactly what the name says. Quince burl brings the third pattern, that of a wood whose fibres swirl instead of running straight.

Care

A piece of this nature is kept dry and lightly oiled. Wipe the blade after each use and run a film of fine oil over the San Mai and the mokume alike: both surfaces are made of dissimilar metals, and that contrast is precisely what oxidation would dull. The quince burl inserts ask only for a soft cloth and a little neutral oil once a year. Feed the leather with a suitable cream or wax, and never use it to store a damp blade.
