Overview

The MC214D is a Japanese folding knife, released as a limited edition with Max Knives. It measures 122 mm open, 72 mm closed, and weighs 44 g. Its 50 mm sheepfoot blade is forged in VG10 damascus, 2.5 mm thick, and is held open by a liner lock. The handle is cut from ironwood. A belt clip completes the package. Two noble materials in a format that sits in the palm.

VG10 damascus and ironwood

VG10 damascus is not a printed decoration. A VG10 steel core is wrapped in forge-welded layers of steel that are then folded; polishing and etching afterwards reveal the drawing of those strata. Every blade therefore leaves with a pattern that belongs to it alone. Ironwood works on another register: a very dense, naturally oily timber, so tightly grained that it polishes to a shine with no varnish at all. Colour and figure vary from one handle to the next.

Care

Wipe VG10 damascus after every use and keep it lightly oiled: that film is what protects the pattern and stops it pitting. Ironwood needs no varnish, but a wipe of neutral oil once or twice a year feeds the material and revives the grain. Avoid the dishwasher and long soaking, which make wood move. A little fine oil at the pivot keeps the action sweet, and the liner lock can be dusted out with a dry brush.
