Overview

The MKMD is a small accessory carabiner cut from damascus steel. It measures 35 mm long by 15 mm wide and weighs 17 g, a size that closes inside the palm and slips onto a belt loop, a keyring or a pack strap without drawing attention. Its locking mechanism opens and closes one-handed. What sets it apart from the other clips in the catalogue is its material: damascus is usually kept for blades, and meeting it on a piece this size makes for an unusual object.

Why no two damascus pieces match

Damascus steel is not a surface treatment but a stack: several steels of different compositions are forge-welded, drawn out, folded, then folded again until the layers multiply. Once the piece is shaped and etched in acid, the strata react differently and the drawing rises to the surface, light against dark. Because the folding and the machining never fall in exactly the same place twice, two pieces taken from the same billet never show the same figure.

Care

A drop of thin oil at the locking mechanism keeps its action sweet, and storing the piece dry, rather than at the bottom of a wet pocket, is enough to keep it looking as it did on day one.
