Overview

The CROCH is a numbered mini folding knife. It measures 132 mm open and 78 mm closed, which puts it among the most discreet pocket formats. Its 55 mm sheepfoot blade is 440C steel, 2.5 mm thick, with a plain edge. The handle is micarta, a laminate of cloth and resin whose grip grows firmer as it takes on a patina. A belt clip is fitted, the piece weighs 80 g and it is supplied without a sheath.

How the axe lock works

The axe lock is built around a transverse pin, held under spring pressure, that passes right through the handle and bears against the heel of the blade once it is open. As long as the pin is seated, the blade cannot swing back. To close, you draw the pin rearward with thumb or forefinger and the blade is released. The appeal of the system is its symmetry: the head of the pin stands proud on both sides of the handle, so the movement is identical left or right, and you can close the knife without putting a finger in the blade's path.

Care

An axe lock mechanism likes to be kept clean: brush the dust out of the blade channel and the pin housings with a dry brush, then put a drop of fine oil at the pivot and another on the pin. The spring gets its crisp return back. Wipe the 440C blade after use and keep it lightly oiled. Micarta cleans with warm soapy water and dries off; its surface satins naturally with use, which improves the grip. Check the clip screws for tightness.
