Max Knives MK147 — Assisted Folding Knife, 137 g, Black Aluminium

Overview

What makes the MK147 interesting is what the scales say: 137 g for 208 mm open and 118 mm in the pocket, where the MK140 of the same series weighs 237 g. Its 3Cr13 blade measures 90 mm and is only 2 mm thick, the slimmest of the group, with serrations along part of the edge. The black aluminium handle houses the assisted opening, the liner lock and the belt clip, and carries the two rescue features of the series: a belt cutter and a glass breaker.

Glass breaker and belt cutter

These two features are not for everyday cutting; they are for one occasion. The glass breaker is a hard point set at the butt of the handle: pressed into the corner of a side window, it concentrates the impact onto a few square millimetres instead of spreading it, and tempered glass gives way where a flat blow would have achieved nothing. The belt cutter is an open hook on the spine of the knife, its cutting edge recessed inside the throat: you hook it onto the webbing and pull, never presenting a bare edge towards the person you are freeing. The MK147 carries both.

Care

A slim blade deserves a little restraint at the stone: work with a light hand, without trying to remove metal, and hold the original angle along the whole plain section of the edge; the serrated portion is dealt with separately, tooth by tooth, with a ceramic point. Dry the knife systematically after damp use, blade and handle interior alike, and keep the pivot free of dust so the assist spring keeps its snap. A drop of light oil each season is enough.
