Max Knives MK506 — 440C drop point Mini Dagger with kydex sheath

Overview

The MK506 opens the Mini Dagger line with its shortest format: 86 mm overall and 54 g. Its 30 mm drop point blade is cut from 440C steel and carries a stone washed finish, the greyed, slightly uneven surface treatment that breaks up reflections. The black G10 handle measures 56 mm and vanishes completely inside a closed palm. The supplied kydex sheath grips the piece by pressure on the sides of the handle, which allows flat carry against a garment or slipped into a bag.

What a drop point tip brings to a 30 mm blade

On a drop point, the spine curves gently down towards the tip instead of running straight. The point therefore stays low, in line with the hand, and keeps material behind it. On a short 30 mm blade this shape gives a very directive tool, guided with the fingertips to open a box, trim a strap or start a piece of cordage. It is the same geometry as the MK505 of the line, brought down here to half the blade length.

With its 2 mm blade stock and 56 mm handle, the MK506 remains the lightest and shortest of the four Mini Dagger models, ahead of the MK503 at 114 mm and the MK505 which reaches 139 mm.

Care

440C is a stainless steel, but it likes to stay dry. After any damp or dirty job, wipe the blade with a soft cloth, then run a film of neutral oil over the flats before storing the piece. G10 cleans up with warm soapy water and dries very quickly. The kydex sheath deserves an occasional rinse: dust and sand trapped inside eventually rub against the stone washed finish. Store the whole thing dry, in a closed cupboard.
