Overview

On the PBF-5, the black anodized aluminium is hollowed by a run of dished discs spread along both arms. The pattern is milled from the solid of the integral handle rather than applied: the circles sit slightly recessed, and the finger counts them as the arms turn on their two pivots around the blade. The blade itself, in D2 tool steel, takes a 108 mm clip point profile with a light satin finish. 142 mm closed, 245 mm open.

Every handle design in the series has its own way of speaking to the finger. The dished discs of the PBF-5 form a run of circular hollows along the length of the arms, obtained by machining directly into the anodized aluminium with no applied part: the integral construction stays in one piece. This is the third of the four handles on the grid, after the V ridge of the PBF-1 and 2 and the skeletonised handle of the PBF-3 and 4, and before the angled grooves of the PBF-7 and 8. Its tanto twin is the PBF-6.

Care

The circular hollows hold a little dust: a pass with a dry cloth goes round them and a brush finishes the job. The blade is dried after each handling session and given a film of light oil, which suits D2 tool steel over time. Oil the two pivots as well to keep the rotation even, and retighten their screws if any play appears. Sharpening follows the continuous curve of the clip point through to the tip.
