Overview

The PBF-7 carries the sharpest relief in the series: angled grooves engraved into the black anodized aluminium, gathered in two zones along the length of the arms. It is the only one of the four handle designs that genuinely grips the finger, and you feel it from the first rotations around the two pivots. The blade, a 108 mm clip point in D2 tool steel, is light satin finished and marked D2 at the ricasso. Integral handle construction, 142 mm closed, 245 mm open, 109 g.

Angled grooves that grip the finger

The four handles on the PBF grid are told apart by their relief: a V ridge on the PBF-1 and 2, round piercings on the PBF-3 and 4, dished discs on the PBF-5 and 6, and angled grooves here. Cut on the diagonal and gathered in two groups along the arms, these grooves leave crisp ridges between them that the pad of the finger registers at once. On an object made to be handled, that tactile feedback counts: it helps you know where you are in the rotation without looking at the knife.

Weight 109 g, one of the three lightest in the series along with the PBF-1 and PBF-8.

Care

The engraved grooves brush out easily: a soft-bristled brush is enough to clear the dust. Dry the blade after each session and put back a film of light oil on the tool steel. The two pivots benefit from a drop of oil and a regular check on tightness — that is where the smoothness of the rotation is decided. Sharpening the clip point is done along a single edge, from the grind through to the fine tip.
