Overview

The PA5LTM carries the US 1918 shape in brass, with three finger holes and spikes along the upper edge, and adds one more opening: a hole drilled through the body. It is the only piece in the series with that detail, and it changes two things at once, the material removed and the passage opened up. For the rest you find the wide silhouette handed down from the 1918 model and the warm colour of the yellow metal.

What the hole changes

A hole is first of all material taken away: the brass removed no longer weighs anything in the hand, and a drilled piece is necessarily lighter than the same one left solid. It is then a passage. A lace, a cord or a lanyard slips through it, and the object stops wandering loose at the bottom of a pocket; hung up, it also stores on a hook or on the peg of a stand, which counts when a collection is shown upright rather than flat. And it is a detail of drawing, an opening that lightens a solid outline to the eye.

Care

Like any brass, this one is happy with a soft cloth, passed now and then over the body and inside the openings, where damp lingers longest. The hole asks for one extra move: wipe it after taking a cord out, since a wet braid holds water against the metal. If you let the piece turn towards the warm tone of old brass, there is nothing else to do; if you prefer the polished yellow, a paste for copper alloys puts it back.
