Max Knives PA25A Piranha — Two-finger antique aluminium impact tool

Overview

Named PIRANHA, the PA25A owes its title to the row of teeth running along its spine, a set of fangs recalling the Amazonian fish. It sits on two fingers, measures 78 mm by 70 at 7 mm thick and weighs 100 g. The aluminium alloy it is cut from has been given an antique finish that darkens the valleys between the teeth and underlines the outline. A paracord lanyard comes with the piece, whose rings measure 26 mm across.

A one-piece build

The PIRANHA is machined from a single block of metal: no screws, no rivets, no added parts. That construction removes at a stroke everything which, on an assembled object, eventually develops play, works loose or asks to be checked. It also has a visual consequence: the spine, the fangs and the rings all belong to the same material and follow one another with no break and no joint line. A one-piece body is easier to clean too, since no gap exists between two components where water or sand could settle.

The paracord lanyard

The paracord supplied is a braided line descended from parachute suspension cords: a nylon sheath protecting a bundle of inner strands, supple, abrasion-resistant and untroubled by damp. Threaded through the piece it becomes a wrist attachment or a pull point for retrieving the object from a deep pocket. Its braid also gives a textile grip, warmer and less slippery than bare metal, and it can be unpicked when needed to release several metres of usable cordage in camp.

Care

The antique finish is preserved by avoiding anything that polishes: no paste, no cleaning cream, no abrasive pad, or the valleys will lighten and the contrast between the teeth will fade. A dry cloth and a soft brush handle the essentials. The lanyard detaches and washes separately in soapy water, then dries in open air: nylon regains its suppleness as it dries and shrugs off repeated washing.
