Max Knives MK143 — Partially Serrated Tanto Folder, Stainless Handle

Overview

The MK143 is the biggest format in this line of folders: 230 mm open, 135 mm closed, with a 3Cr13 tanto blade 95 mm long and 3.5 mm thick at the spine, the most generous thickness of the group. The blade carries a black finish and serrations along part of its edge. The stainless steel handle is set with a skull inlay, an applied motif that gives the knife its identity at first glance. Opening is assisted, and the knife carries both a glass breaker and a belt cutter.

The tanto blade and its partial serrations

A tanto blade is recognisable by its angled tip: instead of a curve sweeping up to the point, two straight segments meet at a marked angle. The result is a thick point backed by plenty of steel, and a long straight edge that works well flat against a surface. On the MK143, the section of edge nearest the handle is serrated: those teeth bite into fibrous material — rope, webbing, heavy cardboard — catching the fibre instead of sliding over it, while the plain section towards the tip stays available for clean, controlled cuts.

Care

A partly serrated edge is sharpened in two stages: the plain section on a stone or a steel, the serrated section scallop by scallop with a round file or a tapered ceramic rod that matches the profile of each tooth, always working from the same side of the blade. Dry the blade and the inlay after damp use, and do not forget the pivot area, where water stays trapped. A drop of light oil on the pivot two or three times a year keeps the assisted action healthy. Store the knife dry.
